The rescued victims
By ABIODUN LAWAL
The Police Command in Ogun says it has rescued 11 Ghanaian nationals allegedly held hostage in Sagamu after being lured to Nigeria with promises of Canadian and Spanish visas.
DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Command’s spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abeokuta.
Babaseyi said the rescue followed actionable intelligence received on Monday, prompting operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to mobilise to the suspected hideout.
He said the victims, comprising seven males and four females, were safely rescued during the intelligence-led operation.
According to him, preliminary investigations indicate that a fellow Ghanaian allegedly deceived the victims by promising to facilitate their overseas travel.
He said each victim reportedly paid some amount of money before being brought to Nigeria and allegedly held against their will.
Babaseyi said the rescued victims were receiving appropriate care and support, while detectives intensified efforts to track down and arrest other persons connected to the alleged criminal network.
He quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, as commending the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its prompt response and professionalism.
Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, combating transnational crime and preventing criminals from exploiting unsuspecting members of the public.
“Efforts will continue until those responsible for the alleged crime are apprehended and brought to justice.
“Members of the public should verify overseas travel and visa processing arrangements before making payments and to report suspicious activities to the police,”he said. (NAN)
