The crashed Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft
Two weeks after the military jet crash, The Guardian can report that the black box has not been located.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft ATR-42 with the registration number NGR 931 had crashed into a swampy area in Igbokoda, Ondo State on Monday, October 5, 2026, killing all 25 persons on board.
A few days after the crash, the government set up an investigative committee to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the crash.
However, two weeks after the crash, the black box had yet to be found, while its fuselage had been found in pieces.
The black box consists of two devices: the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).
The essence of a black box is to record critical flight data and cockpit audio so investigators can reconstruct the sequence of events after an aviation accident and prevent future tragedies.
Without the recovery of the device, it would be impossible to know the cause of the accident.
A source close to the committee, who didn’t want his name in print, told The Guardian yesterday that the black boxes of the aircraft are yet to be found.
The source, however, exuded confidence that the device would be located, as professionals had been engaged to search for the equipment in the swampy area where the aircraft crashed.
No fewer than 25 persons, including the crew, had perished in the air crash.
The aircraft had lost contact with Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) at about 9:13 a.m. before crashing near a naval base in Igbokoda. (The Guardian)
