US-based boxer Joana Nwamerue
•Says she likes to beat people and get payment for doing that
American-based professional boxer, Joana Nwamerue, has said that she did not start fighting because she wanted to be a professional boxer.
Speaking about her latest fight coming up on October 30, 2026 at Hard Rock Casino, Soundwaves Theatre, Atlantic City, in the state of New Jersey, United States, the pugilist born of a Nigerian father and a Bulgarian mother said that what led her into professional boxing was that she and her brother were being attacked by people who hated black people on the streets of Bulgaria when they were growing up.
Nwamerue, who is already on her seven knockout professional fights, said that her mother told them that since she would not be able to be protecting them on the streets, they should learn how to protect themselves.
According to her, the advice from her mother made her and her brother to start learning kick boxing and taekwondo and from there to professional boxing.
Her words: “I love to beat people and receive payment. I started gymnastics when I was three years old, but gymnastics it is not like the other sports. There is an aggression in boxing that is not in gymnasium. This aggression is with control and this aggression came because of racism. My brother and I started with kick boxing. We are kick boxing and taekwondo champions in Bulgaria, because we were attacked by people who didn’t like black people — skin heads — and my mother was like, 'kids, I can’t save you on the streets. You have to learn how to protect yourselves.' So kick boxing and taekwondo were ways of protecting ourselves.”
On why she thought that she would win her next match against hard-punching Jaica Green, she said: "I know that I have unstoppable power. I know that my power can stop anyone. Everybody who is half African or from Africa has the advantage of being strong and tough. We have good genes and good bones. We are like masculine. My seven professional fights have ended in knockouts, so nobody can put me down. I don’t have to train a lot to get into shape, like a maximum of three days. And I am getting into shape because my body remembers everything, so, I have the advantage of being a person of different colours. One of them is from Europe and the other is black, respectfully Africa. I take that as an advantage and that shows that I am more than the others."
Nwamerue also said that sports run in her family.
According to her, her father was a soccer player from Nigeria, while her mother was an international professional athlete from Bulgaria.
She said that she started professional boxing in 2019 but because of COVID-19, she had to lie low and resumed fully in 2022.
Speaking further, she said that the greatest thing that has happened to her career was relocating to the United State.
She said in Bulgaria, she was the only female on her boxing category and did not even have ladies to spar with.
However, she said that in Las Vegas where she currently lives, she has top female boxers as spars.
“I think that I belong to America, that is the right place for me. I feel great with my coach and my team mates. I am around champions, the environment that I am now is great. I have the opportunity to spar with Micheala Mayer, Florencia, Sandy Ryan. I am having sparing session with the best fighters in the world and also being around best fighters boys. Nobody in Bulgaria have the opportunity that I have," she said.
Nwamerue said that apart from being a professional boxer, she is also an actress, a dancer and an entrepreneur, adding that her brand name is Crazy, sexy and savage.
