Two away teams completely tore up the script on Matchday 9 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) as Nasarawa United and Sporting Lagos secured stunning victories on the road on Sunday, October 18.
In a league traditionally dominated by home-ground advantage, Nasarawa United put on a clinical display to dismiss bottom-of-the-table Inter Lagos 2-0 in Lagos, while Sporting fought back in a five-goal thriller to stun Plateau United 3-2 in Jos.
Without a doubt, the unexpected results have sent shockwaves through the league standings, proving that no home turf is entirely safe this season.
In Jos, Plateau United entered the game with massive confidence following a 4-0 drubbing of Kano Pillars in their previous match, but Sporting fought hard to the three points at stake.
Sporting Lagos drew first blood in the 10th minute through Aliyu Buba, but Victor Bawa scored a brace in the 34th minute and first-half added time to send Plateau United into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
On resumption, Sporting took over proceedings, with Victor Samuel and Aondona Jacob Adeede scoring a goal each in the 53rd and 83rd minutes to secure the historic away win.
In Lagos, Kelechi Ogbodo and legendary Leonard Ugochukwu scored in the 10th and 40th minutes respectively as Nasarawa United earned their first away win of the season at Inter.
Elsewhere, bragging rights in the North-West derby went to Kano Pillars, who secured a vital 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Katsina United at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano to end a five-game winless run.
In Minna, Niger Tornadoes kept their strong home record intact with a tight 2-1 win over Ikorodu City. Obalowu Nafiu and Musa Bashir were on target for Tornadoes, while Ayinde Basit scored a consolation goal for City in second-half added time.
Meanwhile, nine-time champions Enyimba failed to fully shake off their recent defensive worries, playing out a frustrating 0-0 draw against Warri Wolves. The clash between Rivers United and Barau FC had to be stopped in the 77th minute due to heavy rainfall in Port Harcourt, which left the pitch waterlogged. The remaining 13 minutes will be played this morning. (Daily Trust)
