The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has called for urgent action to address the deteriorating state of roads across the country, warning that poor road conditions remain a critical safety concern following the fatal tanker explosion at Oluku, Edo State.
The union made the call while mourning victims of the explosion, which occurred on Thursday, October 15, along the Benin–Lagos Highway in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
In a statement issued on Friday, NUPENG expressed condolences to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, and residents of the affected Oluku community over the loss of lives, injuries and destruction of property caused by the incident.
The union said the tragedy underscored the need for immediate and sustained measures to improve road safety, particularly in Edo State and across the country.
NUPENG also expressed concern that fatal incidents continued to occur despite its collaborative efforts with safety agencies to educate the public on the dangers of scooping spilled fuel and other flammable substances at accident scenes.
It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Edo State Government and other stakeholders in implementing preventive measures to reduce such incidents.
The union commended first responders and medical personnel for their prompt intervention, while expressing solidarity with affected families and communities.
It called on Nigerians to prioritise safety and remain vigilant, stressing the need for collective action to prevent avoidable tragedies. (Guardian)
