The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to investigate a viral video depicting the alleged trial by ordeal and assault of a woman in Nkanu East Local Government Area.

Police identified the victim as Chinenye Okonkwo, a woman of about 60 years from Amafu Village, Ugbawka, Nkanu East LGA.

In a Monday press statement, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said operatives from Nkanu East Division have visited the victim and obtained her statement following the circulation of the video.

According to Ndukwe, preliminary findings indicate that Okonkwo was allegedly subjected to severe abuse, including being forced to eat human faeces, over accusations of witchcraft and being responsible for the death of her husband’s brother’s wife.

The command said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest the perpetrators, who are currently at large.

CP Giwa condemned the alleged acts of violence and degrading treatment and directed a thorough investigation with intensified efforts to apprehend the suspects and their accomplices.

The commissioner warned against jungle justice and other forms of self-help, assuring that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law. (The Sun)
