The murdered Assistant Superintendent of Immigration, Ibrahim Babagiwa
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Niger State Command, has confirmed the death of an officer attacked by bandits during a surveillance operation in Niger.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSI Mukhtar Abubakar, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Minna on Monday.
Abubakar said Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I (ASI I) Ibrahim Babagiwa and an inspector were attacked in Woko village, Tungan Waya axis.
He said the incident occurred on October 6 when the officers embarked on a surveillance operation along the Tungan Waya-Woko axis.
During the attack, Babagiwa was killed, while the inspector sustained machete injuries but managed to escape, the statement said.
Abubakar added that the inspector was currently stable and responding to treatment.
He said Babagiwa’s remains were discovered burnt two days after the attack, and he had since been buried according to Islamic rites.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to combating irregular migration and addressing other security challenges along Nigeria’s international border.
The spokesperson also reaffirmed the command’s resolve to discharge its statutory responsibilities in spite of the prevailing security challenges. (Text, excluding headline: NAN)
