Former Nigeria international basketball player, Olumide Oyedeji, on Monday formally declared his intention to contest the presidency of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
Oyedeji made the declaration in Lagos during a press briefing, outlining his plans to use his playing experience and international exposure.
He said his administration would prioritise grassroots development, stronger domestic competitions, player welfare and improved international partnerships.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oyedeji, who was discovered during his junior playing days in Ibadan, represented Nigeria at major international competitions.
He also played professionally in different parts of the world, gaining experience which he said could strengthen the federation’s international relationships.
He said his international exposure could create better pathways for Nigerian players to develop locally and secure opportunities abroad.
Oyedeji identified grassroots development as a major priority, particularly through stronger links between schools, clubs, state associations and national teams.
The former national team captain has contributed to grassroots basketball through his basketball camp, which provides young players opportunities to develop their talents.
He said he would establish a structured national pathway to identify promising players early and provide coaching, competition and educational support.
Oyedeji also pledged to improve domestic leagues by ensuring regular competition, better organisation and stronger participation by clubs nationwide.
He said a sustainable league structure would provide players more opportunities to compete while helping coaches and officials improve their standards.
Player welfare, he said, would receive greater attention, particularly regarding contracts, insurance, medical support, competition schedules and other playing conditions.
Oyedeji said his international experience could help attract technical partners, sponsors and basketball development organisations to Nigeria.
He also identified commercialisation as an area capable of strengthening the federation through sponsorship, broadcasting, digital content, ticketing and improved promotion.
On women’s basketball, Oyedeji said his administration would strengthen competitions and create more opportunities for young female players to progress to elite basketball.
He said his experience as a player and administrator spanning more than two decades would help him unite stakeholders and provide effective leadership.
Oyedeji said the federation needed constructive relationships with state associations, clubs, players, coaches, referees, sponsors and other stakeholders.
He said the success of his proposed administration would depend on developing grassroots basketball, strengthening competitions, improving player welfare and promoting good governance. (NAN)
