The Federal Government is set to create dedicated 24-hour Energy Zones to deliver stable electricity to high-demand areas across the country, Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has said.

The Minister disclosed this during a strategic closed-door meeting with the leadership of select electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) on the proposed initiative.

The Energy Zones, according to the Minister, are designed to provide uninterrupted power supply to homes, businesses and industries in the country’s highest-demand corridors, namely the Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt.

Tegbe said the constraint in the power sector is not limited to generation and transmission but includes how much power is taken up and delivered at the distribution end.

He explained that the proposed Energy Zones are meant to close that gap, unlock commercial and industrial demand, and strengthen DisCo revenue and collections.

The Minister also expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to build up infrastructure in high-demand areas to ensure supply keeps pace with estimated demand in the growing economy.

The engagement, he noted, reinforces his commitment upon assuming office to adopt a disciplined and sequenced approach to addressing sector challenges.

It also advances the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which places reliable energy at the centre of economic growth, industrialisation and job creation.

In attendance were the leadership of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, Ikeja Electric, Eko Electric, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, and Sahara Energy Group. (New Telegraph)
