A long queue of movie lovers waiting to enter TBS for the screening of Black Market
Hundreds of movie lovers are trooping into the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos as the Nollywood crime thriller, Black Market, attempts to set a Guinness World Record for the largest audience at a film screening in a single location.
The screening is scheduled to take place tonight, with organisers targeting an audience of 50,000 people.
The venue has recorded a heavy turnout, with long queues stretching towards the TBS roundabout as attendees arrived ahead of the scheduled screening.
The event is being staged as the premiere of Black Market and as an attempt to surpass the existing Guinness World Records benchmark for the largest number of people to watch a film in one location.
The event gates opened at 2:00pm, followed by a red-carpet session at about 3:00pm, while the main screening is scheduled for between 7:00pm and 8:30pm.
Other activities, including music, food and games, have also been taking place at the venue ahead of the screening.
The organizer’s official website says the goal is to bring 50,000 Nigerians together for one simultaneous screening at TBS.
The organisers had earlier announced that the gates would open at 2pm, with the film scheduled for screening from 7pm to 8:30pm.
Black Market is directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and produced by Nora Awolowo, with Omowunmi Dada and Nicole Ofoegbu among the production team.
The film stars Dada alongside Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini, also known as Itele D Icon, and Uzor Arukwe, among others.
The crime thriller follows five market women involved in a cross-border smuggling operation amid fuel scarcity and economic pressure. The plot takes a dramatic turn after the daughter of one of the women is kidnapped.
The event is being supported by the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, with several corporate partners also involved.
Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat arrived at the venue of the event at about 8:50pm. Celebrities spotted so far include Gabriel Afolayan, Real Warri Pikin, and Tomi Ojo.
As the crowd continues to build at TBS, the outcome of the Guinness World Records attempt will depend on the attendance and verification process required by the record body. (Channels TV)
