Brentford enjoyed a dream start to their Premier League season as they beat Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
There had been plenty of pre-season excitement around Spurs following the signings of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and others, but they were dismantled by Keith Andrews' excellent Brentford side.
Keane Lewis-Potter put the Bees in front following some fine work from debutant Mamadou Sangare, and Vitaly Janelt and Michael Kayode then pounced when Antonin Kinsky parried shots into their path.
Igor Thiago could even afford to hit a post from the penalty spot without any repercussions for Brentford, who are hoping to punch above their weight again in 2026/27 after narrowly missing out on Europe last campaign.
How the match unfolded
Brentford pushed Spurs back immediately, and though Nathan Collins miscued from a free header and Lewis-Potter's delivery flew across goal without getting a touch, the Bees did not have to wait long to go in front.
Club-record signing Sangare was the catalyst for their 12th-minute opener, as he charged into the area following a give-and-go with Thiago before getting his head up to find Lewis-Potter for a simple finish.
Things went from bad to worse for Spurs when Kinsky pushed Mathias Jensen's shot straight to Janelt for a 33rd-minute tap-in.
De Zerbi reacted to his team's struggles by introducing Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur at half-time, but Spurs fell further behind in the 49th minute. Collins kept a deep corner alive, and when Kinsky failed to hold onto Sangare's volley, Kayode prodded into the roof of the net.
Brentford were awarded a penalty when Bentancur bundled over Kevin Schade, but Thiago failed to make his spot-kick count as his effort hit the base of the post.
Brentford join Arsenal at the top of the early-season table, with Spurs propping up the standings. (Premierleague.com, excluding headline)
