An Islamic scholar has said that Islam prescribes severe punishment for individuals involved in terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes that threaten public safety.

The scholar, while delivering a sermon, cited Surah Al-Ma’idah, Verse 33 of the Qur’an, which outlines punishments for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and spread corruption on earth.

According to him, the verse states that those who engage in such acts may face capital punishment, crucifixion, amputation of opposite hands and feet, or exile from the land, depending on the gravity of their crimes and the judgment of lawful authorities.

He stressed that Islam does not tolerate criminality or violence carried out under the guise of religion, adding that the religion places a high premium on the protection of human life, property and public order.

The cleric explained that those who commit offences such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and treason have prescribed punishments under Islamic law once they are lawfully apprehended, prosecuted and found guilty.

He noted that the objective of such punishments is to deter violent crimes, safeguard society and ensure justice for victims.

The scholar urged Muslims and the general public not to associate the actions of terrorists and other violent criminals with the teachings of Islam, maintaining that the religion unequivocally condemns the shedding of innocent blood and all forms of corruption on earth.

He also called on security agencies and the judiciary to continue working within the law to ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice. (Zagazola)
