Police operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday discovered the lifeless bodies of newborn twin infants in a drainage channel within the community.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters received information in the early hours of Sunday about the discovery of two lifeless twin infants who had been abandoned in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, Okpoko.
He said that following the report, the operatives immediately swung into action by securing the scene, gathering vital evidence, and commencing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Ikenga, preliminary investigations led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the infants.
He said: “The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators in unraveling the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
“Further developments will be communicated to the public in due course.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has described the incident as a disturbing case of man’s inhumanity to man and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.
He however commended the police operatives for their swift response and diligent investigative efforts, which resulted in the arrest of the parents of the deceased infants shortly after the incident was reported.
While condemning the act, Orutugu stressed that every child deserves protection, care, and the opportunity to live and thrive.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable in connection with the incident will face the full weight of the law.
