The remains of Ex-Defence Information chief, Rtd Rabe Abubakar, being conveyed for burial
The remains of former Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major-Gen Rabe Abubakar (rtd), were buried on Saturday night in Katsina following his death in his kidnappers’ den.
He was buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
The interment was preceded by the Janazah prayers of two rakats, with family members, military personnel, government officials and some residents in attendance.
The ceremony followed the release of his body by his abductors. No reason was given for the action of the kidnappers, who are still holding the General’s widow.
The couple were abducted on May 30 on their way to a wedding. The kidnappers had initially promised to release Mrs Abubakar, but reneged.
They claimed that they changed their mind because of the deployment of more security agents to fish them out.
About four days ago, Mrs Abubakar, with her husband beside her, in a video, appealed to the authorities to accede to the abductors’ demand to facilitate their release.
A Crisis Reporter, Bakatsine, via his X handle, shared pictures of the funeral.
The Katsina State Government had earlier confirmed that the retired officer died in the custody of the kidnappers.
Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu Danmusa, said security agencies received intelligence that the General had died in captivity.
According to the government, Abubakar reportedly succumbed to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension amid ongoing efforts to secure his release.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a tragic loss to Katsina State and the nation. He said the deceased had served Nigeria with distinction.
In a statement, the Defence Headquarters described Abubakar as a committed officer who contributed immensely to counter-insurgency operations.
It said his commitment to duty and Nigeria’s unity would remain shining example for all personnel of the Armed Forces
At the burial, mourners paid their last respects to the late General as they bemoaned the circumstances of his death. (The Nation)
