The rescued Dr Emegakor Edwin
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
The Nigerian Medical Association, (NMA), Anambra State chapter, on Tuesday suspended its planned industrial action following the successful rescue of its kidnapped member, Dr. Emegakor Edwin.
This was contained in a communiqué issued by the Association after an Emergency General Meeting held in Awka.
It explained that the suspension was in appreciation of the swift intervention by security agencies that led to the doctor’s freedom.
The NMA commended the Anambra State Government and the operatives of the Rapid Response and Anti-kidnap Squad, Awkuzu Unit of the Nigeria Police, for their prompt and courageous action.
It also condoled with the family of a police officer who lost his life during the rescue operation, and further offered to offset the medical bills of two other officers who sustained injuries in the fierce gun duel with the kidnappers.
While declaring its support for the growing call for the establishment of State Police and other measures aimed at securing lives and property in the state, the Association appealed to the state government to tighten the security architecture across state.
The communiqué which was signed by the state Chairman Dr. Princeton Okam and the Secretary, Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi respectively stated that Emegakor was rescued unharmed on Sunday morning, May 11, at Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area alongside other victims.
The Association however hailed the Anambra State Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and the Commissioner designate for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, for their intervention.
Dr. Emegakor Edwin, Medical Director of Crown Hospital, Nkpor, was abducted on Thursday, May 7, 2026 inside his hospital while on ward round by gunmen dressed in military and police uniforms.
Following the incident, the NMA issued a 48-hour ultimatum for his release.
