ACAM National Coordinator, Akin Okunowo Akin Aluta
The Anti-Cult Alliance Movement (ACAM) has thrown its weight behind Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu’s sweeping reform agenda, describing his May 5 emergency declaration as “a new dawn for policing in Nigeria.”
In a passionate statement issued Wednesday and signed by ACAM National Coordinator Akin Okunowo a.k.a Akin Aluta, the movement said Nigerians must now move from criticism to collaboration if the Force is to regain public trust.
“A new police is possible. And it starts now,” Okunowo declared, hailing Disu’s emergency meeting with senior officers at Force Headquarters as the clearest signal yet that “the era of business as usual is over.”
Disu’s Record Gives Hope, ACAM Says
Okunowo, who has led ACAM’s anti-cult campaign since 1997, said IGP Disu’s past as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos and Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) proves he is not a reformer in words alone.
“As RRS Commander, he turned the squad into the people’s shield, not their nightmare — through speed, intelligence and discipline,” Okunowo said. “As IRT Head, he hunted down kidnappers and armed robbers that others called ‘untouchable.’ That same man is now IGP, and the reform he started in Lagos is now coming to every state.”
Accountability, Results, and New Tactics
The ACAM leader highlighted four key steps Disu has taken since assuming office:
1. Immediate accountability – The Delta State officer who carried out an extra-judicial killing was dismissed and handed over for prosecution, with “no cover-up, no transfer to another command.”
2. Operational results – In April 2026 alone, police arrested 28 suspected terrorists, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbers, 85 kidnappers and 54 cultists. 189 kidnapped victims were rescued, with 140 firearms and 1,074 rounds of ammunition recovered. “This is intelligence-driven policing in action. We are monitoring them 24/7 too — when they do good, we reference it. When they do bad, we call it out,” Okunowo noted.
3. VCRU launch – The new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) was described as “SARS without the abuse” – a specially trained unit focused on serious crime but bound by strict human rights guidelines, with Commissioners of Police directly supervising operations.
4. Community policing with teeth – Disu has ordered all CPs to hold town hall meetings with traditional and religious leaders and to publish their personal contact numbers for direct citizen access. Okunowo likened this to Disu’s RRS model in Lagos, where patrols were stationed at visible, strategic points across the state.
Zero Tolerance, No Shielding
Okunowo stressed that IGP Disu’s “zero tolerance for misconduct” policy is already yielding results. “No superior officer is shielding any corrupt police officer again. Any police officer who commits is on his own,” he said, adding that the strengthened Police Complaints Response Unit (PCRU) now responds swiftly even to complaints against its own officers.
ACAM’s Call to Nigerians: Stand, Don’t Sabotage
The ACAM coordinator warned that reform cannot succeed if only the police fight corruption within. “We must also fight the corrupt police officers from the inside by standing with this leadership to win this fight,” he said.
He urged citizens to:
- Support good policing and report misconduct via PCRU, promising that “if they are not acting, blow the trumpet and tag us. You already know what we can do. We are always active.”
- Attend town halls to shape how communities are policed.
- Share intelligence rather than remain silent. “No dey fear dem! A closed mouth is a closed destiny!”
- Protect good officers instead of judging the entire Force by the actions of a few bad eggs.
“This Is Our Chance”
“IGP Disu is carrying the weight of 200 million Nigerians on his shoulders,” Okunowo said. “From RRS to IRT to now IGP – the pattern is clear: Wherever Disu leads, discipline follows. Wherever Disu serves, crime falls. This is not praise-singing. This is truth.”
He concluded that Nigerians worldwide must “rise, support, and rebuild trust together” because “a safe Nigeria is not the police’s job alone. It is our collective duty.”
ReformPoliceNg, ACAM’s platform, pledged to remain active 24/7 in monitoring and supporting the process.
“Aluta Continua! Support Reform! Support the New Police! Victoria Ascerta!” Okunowo declared.
