The Federal Government on Friday launched a 1,500-bed hostel project at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), targeting improved accommodation, welfare and learning conditions.

At the ceremony in Yaba, Education Minister, Dr Tunji Alisa said the facility would include recreational and commercial spaces for students.

He said the project reflected President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for stronger learning and living conditions nationwide.

Alausa said government would invest N250 billion in hostel projects across more than 90 tertiary institutions.

He added that TETFund would enforce strict infrastructure compliance to guarantee visible and measurable results.

“Education extends beyond classrooms; student residences must support better living, meaningful connections and effective learning.

“We are committing N250 billion this year for world-class accommodation across institutions, with projects delivered within agreed timelines.

“Government has also supported students and institutions through fees, grants and targeted welfare interventions,” the minister said.

He said partnerships would accelerate delivery, expand access and guarantee safe, dignified accommodation for students.

Alausa added that lecturers were receiving improved welfare packages, interest-free loans and stronger research support.

He also announced a National Research Development Fund expected to mobilise over $500 million yearly.

YABATECH Rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, said the minister’s visit reaffirmed government’s commitment to education infrastructure.

“This project is not bricks and mortar, but hope for students,” Abdul said.

He thanked TETFund and Integrated Projects Ltd., pledging transparent execution and close monitoring.

Governing Council Chairman, Prof. Funso Afolabi, described the project as a milestone for welfare and technical education.

“This hostel will ease accommodation pressure and strengthen academic excellence across campus,” Afolabi said. (NAN)
