Lagos Environmental Taskforce Chair, CSP Adetayo Akerele
Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Taskforce) Unit, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, has distributed branded jackets to the ad hoc security personnel of the agency drawn from the Nigerian Legion.
Akerele said the initiative was designed to ensure the easy identification of personnel during field work.
In a statement, he said, the public had accused the agency of deploying street urchins or thugs during enforcement, allegations the task force denied.
According to the chairman, the new jackets will provide a visual distinction for authorised operatives, and eliminate impersonation.
“The jackets are not just uniforms; they are symbols of accountability. Every operative can be easily identified, and this will help curb misconduct while reassuring the public,” he said.
He said Legion members were recruited because of their background as retired military officers rooted in discipline and training.
In a megacity like Lagos, Akerele explained that the scale and complexity of environmental and special offences require a robust and well-coordinated security presence.
“The operational demands of Lagos require experienced hands. Members of the Legion bring professionalism, restraint and tactical knowledge that are essential for maintaining order during enforcement activities,” he added.
Besides, the jackets are expected to improve efficiency by fostering a sense of unity and responsibility among personnel, he further said. (The Nation)
