Bandits
The Chairman of Goronyo Local Government Area in Sokoto State, Hon Zubairu Yari has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in his communities, saying residents can no longer sleep peacefully due to persistent bandit attacks.
The chairman made this known during an interview with our reporter on Tuesday, where he lamented the frequency of violent incidents across villages in the area.
According to him, hardly a day passes without reports of attacks, leaving residents in a constant state of fear and anxiety.
He disclosed that earlier on Tuesday morning, suspected bandits attacked Tulutu village in Birjigo ward, where they shot a young man and abducted three others.
The young man he said is currently receiving treatment at their general hospital.
In a related incident, the attackers struck Kwanan Keta, kidnapping a commercial motorcycle rider, popularly known as a kabu-kabu operator.
However, security forces were able to rescue the victim.
“It has become a daily occurrence. Our people cannot sleep with both eyes closed anymore,” he said, describing the situation as deeply troubling and calling for urgent government intervention to restore peace.
It would be recalled that the chairman of the neighbouring Wurno Local Government Area, Alh. Abbah Isa Sadiq Achida had also raised similar concerns, alleging that several communities under his jurisdiction were overrun by bandits who reportedly kidnapped over 100 persons in recent attacks.
Providing further insight, a security analyst, Basharu Altine Guyawa, said most of the attacks in Goronyo and Wurno are believed to be carried out by bandits operating from Zamfara State.
According to him, the armed groups often take refuge across a stream in Maradun Local Government Area, from where they launch coordinated attacks on vulnerable villages in Goronyo and Wurno before retreating to their hideouts.
He added that the bandits are typically organized under the command of leaders known as kachalla Chomo and Kachalla Haruna who were heavily armed, making it difficult for local communities to defend themselves.
The chairman reiterated the need for swift and decisive action by security agencies to stem the tide of violence and protect lives and property in the affected areas. (Daily Trust)
