US President Donald Trump on Monday pressed House Republicans to swiftly pass a Senate-approved budget blueprint, calling it a key step toward restoring funding for immigration enforcement agencies.
He emphasized that the immediate priority is for the House of Representatives to adopt the same budget framework already approved by the Senate last week.
“House Republicans must unify, and pass the same Blueprint to get the bill done.
"I’ve asked for the final Bill on my desk by June 1, and we can make that deadline if we keep to the plan, fast and focused," Trump said on Truth Social.
Last week, Senate Republicans took an initial step toward funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol for the remainder of Trump’s term without Democratic support.
That move forms part of a broader Republican strategy to end a partial government shutdown that has left the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unfunded since Feb. 14 amid a partisan standoff over immigration enforcement.
At the center of the dispute are Democratic demands for reforms to immigration enforcement, particularly targeting ICE, following fatal shootings involving federal agents in Minnesota in January.
Democrats have insisted on stronger oversight and tighter limits on immigration enforcement, including banning the use of masks by ICE officers, requiring body cameras to remain on, and mandating visible identification, as a condition for supporting the funding bill. (AA)
