The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 35 serves up a defining round in both the title race and relegation battle, with the Oriental derby between Rangers International and Enyimba headlining the weekend’s fixtures.
Rangers, second with 56 points, are firmly in the hunt and could return to the summit with victory. Enyimba, 13th with 43 points — just three above the danger zone — need points badly to steer clear of trouble. The Flying Antelopes earned a point away to Niger Tornadoes in Minna last time out, while Enyimba arrive on the back of their finest performance of the season, a 3-0 demolition of Katsina United. Sunday’s showdown in Enugu promises to be fierce.
Elsewhere, Kano Pillars face a daunting test against league leaders Rivers United in a fixture with implications at both ends of the table. Sai Masu Gida sit 15th with 42 points and urgently need a win, while Rivers United, top on 58 points, must secure maximum points to keep Rangers at bay.
In Jos, Wikki Tourists look to build on their shock win over Bayelsa United in Yenagoa when they host Bendel Insurance. Victory would lift them to 43 points and strengthen their survival push. Bendel Insurance, seventh with 49 points, remain fringe contenders for continental football but will be without head coach Kennedy Boboye, who continues serving a 17-match suspension.
Plateau United return to their Jos home ground — having played two matches in Lafia due to security concerns — to face Kun Khalifat. The Peace Boys, eighth with 46 points, are keen to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Rivers United, while Kun Khalifat will be targeting points to improve their own survival prospects.
Nasarawa United welcome Warri Wolves to Lafia City Stadium with clear intent to end a run of late-goal defeats. The Solid Miners, sixth with 50 points, need a win to keep their top-four ambitions alive. Warri Wolves, 14th with 43 points, must avoid defeat to stay out of the drop zone.
Katsina United, 10th with 46 points, aim to recover from their heavy Enyimba defeat when they host Bayelsa United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium. Despite their mid-table standing, the Chanji Boys are only six points above relegation, while Bayelsa United arrive desperate after slipping into danger following their home loss to Wikki.
El Kanemi Warriors host Shooting Stars in Maiduguri in another crucial tie. The Warriors are seeking consecutive home wins after edging Nasarawa United 1-0 on Monday, while Shooting Stars, fifth with 51 points, cannot afford further slip-ups in their pursuit of continental qualification.
In Aba, Abia Warriors and Ikorodu City meet in a direct battle for third place. Abia Warriors are fourth with 52 points and could climb above their visitors — Ikorodu, currently third with 55 points — with an emphatic home win
Reigning champions Remo Stars continue their fight for survival with a home fixture against Niger Tornadoes. The Ikenne side are 19th with 40 points and in urgent need of three points, while Tornadoes, 12th with 43 points, are not entirely safe themselves.
Kwara United host Barau FC aiming to consolidate their survival push. The Harmony Boys are 16th with 40 points and need a win to move further clear of danger, following a draw in Enugu and a comeback victory over Remo Stars in their last two outings.
