An Indonesian couple has been flogged 100 times for perpetrating an offence of premarital sex.

The duo was was publicly flogged in accordance with the country’s ruling of the Sharia law which states that individuals caught in violation of the regulation will be sanctioned with necessary punishments.

The enforcement carried out by police officials using a rattan cane at the Banda Aceh province on Tuesday with dozens of people watching also saw four others receiving between eight and 29 strokes each for unlawful sexual activity and consumption of alcohol.

A woman who was sentenced to 27 lashes fainted at the last whip and had to be treated by paramedics.

“We implement Islamic law in Aceh, so whenever someone violates it, we have to carry out punishments like the caning we just conducted,” Rajesh Kana, an official from the local prosecutors’ office, told AFP.

Kana disclosed that sexual relations between unmarried people are outlawed in Aceh, adding that caning retains strong support in Aceh to punish a range of offences that also include gambling and gay sex.

In January, Sharia police, in the territory, caned an unmarried couple 140 times each, which is regarded as the severest punishment since Sharia law was implemented in the province in 2015. (The Guild)
