The lawmaker representing West Virginia’s 2nd District in the United States Congress, Rep Riley Moore, has said that there has been no serious discussion on dividing Nigeria since he began addressing the persecution of Christians in the country.
Moore recently travelled to Nigeria, where he engaged in multiple high-level meetings with Nigerian officials, the Church, aid groups, and IDPs, to get a better understanding of the rampant persecution of Christians in the country.
“In my discussions, the idea of dividing the country has not come up in any serious way. Efforts to embolden separatists hurt Christians in Nigeria – especially in the North and Middle Belt,” he said in a post on X on Saturday.
According to Moore, a destabilised Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent.
“I remain committed to working to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ – and for that matter, all Nigerians – suffering from the instability wrought by terrorists throughout Nigeria,” the Congressman said.
He revealed that the US and Nigeria have just entered into a security cooperation agreement, which is an important step toward tackling the violence in Nigeria and deepening and strengthening the bilateral relationship between our great nations.
In December 2025, Moore revealed that Fulani and Islamic radicals were attacking Christians who sought refuge in Internally Displaced Camps in Benue State.
“Fulani, these Islamic radicals, are attacking the IDP camps. They are attacking them in these IDP camps,” he told Fox News.
The Congressman was part of a delegation sent by U.S President Donald Trump on a fact-finding mission concerning Christian persecution in Nigeria. He and members of the delegation visited Benue State, where they interacted with survivors of terrorist attacks, who shared their stories.
According to Moore, the stories he heard from the victims left him shocked.
“It was really shocking. The stories that we heard, the imagery, it was… I’ve never witnessed anything like that in my life. I met one woman who lost her entire family; five of her children were murdered right in front of her. She was pregnant at the time, and she was able to escape. She had that child in an Internally Displaced Persons camp. You could just see her soul had literally left her body. There are countless stories like this.
“Another woman’s family was attacked; she lost her husband and two daughters. They murdered her unborn child. These Islamic terrorists murdered her unborn child and took it right out of her. It’s beyond words,” Moore said. (Guardian)
