The United Arab Emirates has imposed an immediate travel ban on Mali and called on its citizens already in the West African country to return home as concerns deepen over the evolving security situation.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, 9 December, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised all nationals to avoid travel to Mali with immediate effect.
The Ministry said recent developments had created conditions that require urgent precautionary measures to safeguard Emirati citizens.
The advisory reflects heightened anxiety over Mali’s volatile environment, which has drawn increasing international attention as global actors review the risks facing their citizens in the Sahel.
While the Ministry did not provide specific details about the threats prompting the decision, it noted that the circumstances posed significant risks to personal safety.
Emirati citizens currently in Mali have been instructed to return to the UAE as soon as possible. The Ministry emphasised the importance of adhering to official guidance and remaining vigilant throughout the journey home.
Officials said strict compliance with government instructions would help ensure the safety of nationals and allow for more efficient coordination during what they described as a period of concern.
To support those who may need immediate assistance, the Ministry has also activated a 24-hour emergency hotline. Citizens in Mali have been encouraged to maintain direct contact with UAE authorities for updates, guidance, and rapid support.
The Ministry reiterated its call for caution, urging nationals to closely follow all advisories.
The latest directive adds to a growing list of international alerts linked to insecurity across parts of the Sahel as several governments reassess travel to the region. (Business Insider Africa)
