My children can’t get jobs – Bode George

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has said that his children are unable to secure employment in Nigeria because of his name.

The 70-year-old politician, who was a former Military Governor of Ondo State and later Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), revealed this while speaking during a radio interview on Nigeria Info FM 99.3.

George linked his family’s experience to what he described as the deepening frustration and hardship faced by many Nigerians. He said the growing anger in the country reflected a system that had failed to provide opportunities for both skilled and unskilled citizens.

“Today in Nigeria, everywhere there is hunger and anger. Forget about me being in the PDP, the base of the pyramid is what really matters,” George said. “What have we done to positively impact the generality of Nigerians? There is so much anger in the land and there is so much hunger.”

He expressed concern about rising unemployment, particularly among young graduates and unskilled youths.

“Graduates are floating, no future, no hope; non-graduates are doing nothing. I suggested that Mr. President should set up a special fund to ensure that those guys who didn’t train in any skill can be empowered,” he added.

George proposed that the government create micro-credit schemes to support graduates who wish to start small businesses.

He also criticised the recent appeal by the First Lady for donations towards a national library project, arguing that such funds could be better directed towards youth empowerment.

“Recently, the First Lady announced that she was going to build a national library and she needed contributions. That fund should have been by the President asking these people in the banks, those who donated N20 billion in two days, to give that money, which will be public money, and process it through good management,” he said.

Highlighting how political affiliations can affect personal lives, George revealed that his children have struggled to find employment despite their qualifications. “The younger generation in this country, including my own children who graduated a long time ago, have returned and tried to get a job, but they can’t get a job because their name is Bode George,” he said.

The PDP stalwart called for policies that would bridge inequality and create opportunities for all Nigerians, irrespective of social or political background. (GUARDIAN)
