Retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Wale Abbas
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has announced that a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Wale Abbas, will lead the investigation into the alleged killings of three residents of Akinlalu town by operatives of the state’s Amotekun Corps.
Abbas, who currently serves as Chairman of the Osun Amotekun Board, has been directed to ensure a thorough probe into the role of the Corps Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, in the incident.
Governor Adeleke disclosed this on Monday during a condolence visit to Akinlalu, assuring residents that justice would be served and promising comprehensive medical care for the injured victims.
“On the demand for the suspension of Omoyele, we are working on it,” Adeleke said. “I have directed the Chairman of the Amotekun Board, Wale Abbas, to go to Abuja and ensure a thorough investigation. Those in the hospital are being taken care of, and the ventilator requested for the victims is already underway. Their care is my priority at this time.”
He also commended the community’s youths for maintaining peace despite the tragedy, urging them to remain calm as the investigation progresses.
Earlier, the Youth Leader of Akinlalu, Musbau Adeboye, had demanded the suspension and probe of Omoyele over the killings.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, sparked widespread outrage after Amotekun operatives allegedly invaded the town, shot several residents, and killed three people.
Following the incident, the Osun State Police Command confirmed that Ibrahim Oyebamiji (26), Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo were killed, while Adeagbo Kadijat (22), Oke-Ila Oyebamiji (60), and Fayomi Toheeb (19) sustained gunshot injuries.
The police report also indicated that Amotekun operatives removed the victims’ corpses from the scene.
While the Osun Amotekun leadership admitted that three people were killed, it claimed the operatives acted in self-defence during a gunfight with hoodlums allegedly attempting to seize rifles from the Corps.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, subsequently deployed a special team to take over the investigation. The team has since arrested five Amotekun operatives, though Omoyele, according to police sources, has failed to honour repeated invitations to explain his role in the killings. (PUNCH)
