Nigeria finishes fourth as Brazil, India top Abia para-badminton tourney

Brazil and India emerged as the highest-ranking nations at the inaugural Abia Para-Badminton International Tournament, with host Nigeria placing fourth on the final medals table.

The week-long championship concluded at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, attracting 114 athletes from 13 countries competing across 19 events.

Brazil finished the tournament with seven gold, three silver, and five bronze medals. India came second with six gold, five silver, and 14 bronze, while Peru followed in third place with six gold, three silver, and two bronze. Nigeria concluded the competition with three gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals.

Participating countries included Egypt, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, and Mozambique.

Among Nigeria’s gold medal winners, Paralympic bronze medallist Eniola Bolaji triumphed in the women’s singles SL3, defeating Cameroon’s Danyele Mouafo 2-0 (21-7, 21-3).

In the men’s singles SL4, Jeremiah Nnanna claimed gold after beating fellow Nigerian Yahaya Ayuba 2-0 (21-9, 21-8). Mary Nathan added to the nation’s medal tally in the women’s singles WH1, overcoming Brazil’s Juscileia Silva 2-1 (5-21, 21-18, 21-17).

Nigeria’s silver medallists were Nnanna, Obinna Nwosu, Chinyere Okoro, Ayuba, and Ijeoma Chukwuemeka.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Abia State Governor Alex Otti confirmed that the state would host the tournament again next year and emphasised his administration’s commitment to inclusion and support for persons with disabilities.

“For us in Abia, our mantra is inclusion, and that’s one of the reasons we offered to host you,” he said. “Even our public transport system, which we are putting together, provides for those in wheelchairs to have the same comfort that able people enjoy.”

The governor also announced a cash award of $50,000 for the 144 athletes from 13 countries, a gesture that drew applause from attendees.

Jeff Shingoli, CEO and representative of the Badminton World Federation, commended the state and the country for promoting inclusivity and sports development. “Abia State and indeed Nigeria have shown commitment by welcoming the world’s best. This environment has been created to ensure the dreams of our para-badminton athletes thrive,” he said.

Francis Orbih, president of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, praised Governor Otti for his sponsorship and support, describing the event as a significant step for para-sports in Nigeria.

The championship will be immediately followed by the All Africa Para-Badminton Championship, scheduled to hold from 7 to 12 October at the same venue in Umuahia. (THE GUARDIAN)
