PDP crisis: Tukur heads for court, wants jail term for rebel leaders

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has headed for court in his bid to tame party dissidents who last Saturday walked out of the PDP Special National Convention and announced the formation of the ‘New PDP’.

The embattled party chairman in a suit filed yesterday before a Federal High Court, Abuja, is seeking the conviction and one-year jail term for factional chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje; his deputy, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja; and secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is also joined in the suit No. FHC/ABJ/50412013 filed on his behalf by Chief Adebayo Dayo and Semiu Sodipo for themselves and on behalf of the executive committee of PDP in Ogun State.

The litigants are accusing the defendants of contempt as their action allegedly violates the court judgment of January 11 this year. He described their action as being tantamount to planning a coup, arguing that the PDP Constitution stipulates the right way for taking over the leadership of the parry.

Addressing newsmen in his office at Oniru Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos, Tukur’s counsel, Ajibola Oluyede, said he also had the authority of his clients to file another suit before a Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja, asking it to throw out the suit brought before it by Baraje and others against Tukur and his executive committee for lack of jurisdiction.
