The stranded miners who were repatriated from Central America Republic
The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has responded cautiously to serious allegations of abuse and non-payment of salaries made by 12 Nigerian workers recently rescued from the Central African Republic (CAR).
A Chinese official, according to a report, on Saturday, confirmed that the Embassy is taking the matter seriously and has initiated an investigation.
The Nigerian workers, who returned to the country last week, have recounted harrowing experiences of sexual abuse, starvation, and forced labour while employed by Chinese mining companies in the CAR.
Their testimonies have prompted a swift reaction from Nigerian authorities, including the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), which has pledged to pursue justice on their behalf.
In a formal statement, the Chinese Embassy acknowledged that it has noted the “relevant reports” and has “attached great importance to this matter.” The Embassy stated it would “immediately commence an investigation” and requested that the information not be disseminated until the results are released.
“Consistently requires all Chinese citizens abroad to comply with the laws and regulations of their host countries and conduct business activities by all applicable rules and requirements.” The Embassy has assured that the outcome of Its investigation will guide any further action. This response reflects the Chinese government’s official stance on its citizens’ conduct abroad and its commitment to international legal standards.
“We have also just noted the relevant reports and attach great importance to this matter. We will immediately commence an investigation. Before the investigation results are released, we request that the information not be disseminated or cited. The Chinese Government consistently requires all Chinese citizens abroad to comply with the laws and regulations of their host countries and conduct business activities by all applicable rules and requirements,” the Embassy stated.
