Delegates from all over Nigeria gathered in the country’s capital, Abuja, for the special convention of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have started trooping into the Eagle Square venue.
Movement has been restricted in parts of the city, with all major roads leading to Eagle Square blocked. Security operatives and police dogs can be seen stationed at strategic points within the vicinity of the congress.
About 3,500 delegates from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are participating in the convention to be used to elect 19 new members of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC).
The offices to be filled include those of Deputy National Chairman, Assistant National Secretary, National Publicity Secretary, National Organising Secretary, National Financial Secretary, Woman Leader, Youth Leader and the office of the National Auditor. Others are deputies to the NWC members and some national ex-officio positions.
The positions became vacant on June 20 as a result of the mass resignation of the NEC members in the wake of the report of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which faulted the conduct of the March 2012 national convention.
