The Kidney Surgery Team of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has successfully completed another kidney transplant for a patient with kidney problem.
Speaking at a media briefing after the surgery, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of LASUTH, Prof Adewale Oke, stated that the success recorded with the second kidney transplant by the hospital was made possible by the State Government’s determination to sustain innovations in healthcare delivery in the state and nation.
“We are pleased to inform you that this is yet another feat in the hospital’s quest to provide excellent healthcare for the people of the state through our homegrown professionals,” he said.
The CMD said that the deed could not have been achieved but for the intervention of the Lagos State Government, adding that, “the administration of Governor Akinwumi Ambode has in no small way facilitated the success of this mission.”
In response to questions from journalists, Prof. Oke said: “We will continue to strive to provide excellent and accessible healthcare that will improve the standard of living of the good people of Lagos State and Nigeria.”
While assuring the residents of the State that the hospital is confident of maintaining the achievement in kidney transplantation, Oke noted the feat will also provide an alternative choice and reduce the high cost of foreign exchange expended by Nigerians on medical trips abroad.
In his remark, the head of the transplantation team, Dr. Olugbenga Awobusuyi, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the mission, stressing that there is no complication during and after the transplant.
He however lamented on the scarcity of donors, saying that many kidney patients are on dialysis awaiting donors.
Awobusuyi estimated the cost of kidney transplant between N4-5 million, which he believes is more affordable compared to the costs in other hospitals around the world.
He submitted that the hospital, apart from being affordable, ensures best practice in carrying out the mission while all members of the team are coordinated and experienced as it has been demonstrated on the two occasions.
It will be recalled that the hospital performed its first successful kidney transplant last year.
