The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday in Onitsha paraded a 31year- old suspected drug baron, Mr. Chidiebere Vincent, for allegedly carrying 25.2 kilograms of banned methamphetamines, worth N1.78 billion.
Speaking to Journalists after parading the suspect, the Anambra State Commander of NDLEA, Mr. Sule Momodu said Chidiebere was arrested in Awka on Thursday last week.
He said that though investigation into the matter was still ongoing, the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation into the matter was concluded.
Momodu also disclosed that three laboratories where hard drugs were produced in the state had been discovered in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government and Nanka in Orumba North Local Government, adding that heavy surveillance had been mounted in the affected areas.
According to him, the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano in his support for a crime free state has announced a cash price of N500, 000 to anybody that could provide information on similar laboratories in the state.
He described methamphetamines as the most potent illicit drug in the world, adding that the discovery of such illicit drug usually gives the country a serious concern.
“If criminals have access to this drug, you can imagine what harm this will cause in the society. It produces a lot of financial gains and they can use the proceeds to alter our political landscape.
“We are ready to fight this scourge and if we fail to tackle it now and allow them to take the space, it will spell doom not only in Anambra, but the entire country. So we do not have a choice, than to fight it headlong,” the NDLEA boss stated.
