Traditional Ruler of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom in Delta State, HRM Obi Chukwuka Noah Akaeze
The Traditional Council of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom has confirmed the arrest of two individuals, Ngozi Fortune and Patrick Atu, in connection with allegations of online defamation of the monarch, HRM Obi Chukwuka Noah Akaeze, as well as other accusations, including assault and theft.
Chief James Asika Onwordi (Ibori Ubulu), the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom and traditional prime minister, revealed that the arrests followed multiple warnings to the suspects, who are accused of making negative statements about the king on social media.
According to Onwordi, the individuals had been summoned to appear before the council but failed to comply.
“We are aware of Ngozi Onwordi Fortune’s repeated negative comments about our revered king. As a kingdom, we will not allow anyone to bring the name of the Obi into disrepute,” Chief Onwordi said during a press briefing.
He explained that the leadership of the kingdom considers such actions as a direct challenge to the authority of the traditional institution and warned that any attempt to undermine the monarchy would be met with strong opposition.
The council also addressed a letter circulating online, allegedly from the Obi requesting the release of Fortune. Onwordi dismissed the letter as unauthorised, attributing it to some of the Obi’s relatives who, he said, were attempting to cause division within the royal household.
“The palace is united, and we will not tolerate anyone undermining the authority of the Obi of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom. The arrest was made in accordance with the kingdom’s laws, and no one has the right to disrespect the Obi,” Chief Onwordi stated.
The incident has sparked discussions within the kingdom and online, raising concerns about the balance between freedom of expression and respect for traditional institutions in Nigeria.
Local authorities have called for greater civility and respect in public discourse involving traditional figures, emphasising the importance of upholding the dignity of the monarchy. (The Guardian)
