Under-performing Super Eagles need plenty of prayers to pick 2026 World Cup ticket
Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico received yet another knock when the Super Eagles were held to a one-all draw by visiting Warriors of Zimbabwe this Tuesday evening, March 25, 2025, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Hopes of victory were high when goal king Victor Osimhen headed in an Ola Aina cross in the 74th minute to give Nigeria the lead. The hopes however faded on the dot of 90 minutes when a Zimbabwean striker slipped in through a seemingly confused Eagles backline to slot in the ball behind goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to erase the deficit.
With both South Africa and Rwanda winning their matches to extend their lead on the Group C table, Nigeria remains in a difficult position in the qualifiers, having garnered only seven points from six matches and sitting fourth on the log.
The team secured its only win of the campaign against Rwanda last week Friday, with Osimhen accounting for both goals.
