Mary Habila
Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) has clarified that Mary Habila, the woman recently identified as a physiotherapist in Ebonyi, is not listed on the official register of licensed physiotherapists in Nigeria.
The society made the clarification in a statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Team after verifying Habila’s credentials through the appropriate regulatory channels.
According to the NSP, a search of the official database of registered physiotherapists did not return the name “Mary Habila,” raising concerns over the need for proper verification before individuals are publicly identified with regulated professions.
“Following verification through the appropriate regulatory channels, the name ‘Mary Habila,’ as stated, does not appear on the database of registered physiotherapists,” the statement read.
The society stressed that public officials, particularly those occupying high offices, have a responsibility to ensure that information presented to Nigerians is accurate and verifiable before making public pronouncements.
It noted that professional identity should not be based on assumptions or public perception but on verifiable records maintained by the relevant regulatory authorities.
“The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy has consistently maintained that professional identity is not a matter of assumption or public perception; it is a matter of verifiable fact. Where questions arise, they should be resolved through the appropriate regulatory processes, not through speculation or unverified claims,” the statement added.
The NSP said the clarification should serve as a reminder to all stakeholders of the need to uphold the integrity of regulated professions by ensuring that qualifications and professional identities are accurately represented.
While addressing the issue, the society also expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased.
“Finally, while it is important to establish the facts, we must not lose sight of the human tragedy at the heart of this matter. We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased, and pray that her soul rests in perfect peace. May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time,” the statement said. (Nigerian Tribune, excluding headline)
