The accident scene
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
A lover boy and his girlfriend have escaped lynching after their car crash into a loading Sienna car, instantly killing the driver and a loader. The tragic incident happened around 6:00 a.m. today, Friday, February 28, 2025, in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State.
News Express learnt that both victims, who were workers of Anambra Comfort Line Transport Company, were loading luggage in the trunk of a Sienna car in their loading bay, in readiness for a trip to Lagos, when the accident occurred.
Narrating the incident, a bystander said a Lexus 350 RX driven by a young man, with a young girl in the front seat, lost control while driving at high speed along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, ramming into the trunk of the Sienna vehicle where the men stood, killing them instantly.
He said: “Apart from these two corpses lying here, some people sustained injuries and have been taken to hospital. These men you see here now lying dead were discussing and joking with us just this morning after our morning prayers.
“Last night, we were all here to hold a candle session for one of our drivers who died, and now this has happened.”
On how the incident happened, the source said: “The driver and his girlfriend were rescued without any hurt. The boy is saying the accident occurred as a result of brake failure, but we know it is not true.
“There is no sign that he tried to apply brake, or that he was struggling with the car. We suspect that the boy and his girlfriend were coming back from the club. It is either he was discussing with the girl and lost control or he was drunk or feeling sleepy. You know all these Yahoo boys how they behave.”
News Express learnt that it took the intervention of the park owners and the police to save the young driver and his girlfriend from being lynched.
Friends of the deceased men who were angered by the deaths attacked the driver, leading to their being shielded and locked up in a room until the arrival of police operatives, who smuggled them out.
