Five kidnapped members of Elyon Paradise Ministry, Ogwashi-Uku, have regained their freedom following a daring rescue operation by operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad of the Delta State Police Command.
The victims were abducted during a night vigil on February 22, 2025, but were successfully rescued on February 25 after security forces stormed the kidnappers’ hideout in Ubuluku forest.
Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, tactical teams were swiftly deployed to Ogwashi-Uku, with operatives relocating to the area to track down the criminals and secure the victims’ release.
In a high-risk sting operation led by CSP Labe Joseph, the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad, in collaboration with the Ubuluku community vigilante and concerned locals, stormed the kidnappers’ hideout. Upon sighting the operatives, the kidnappers opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. However, the criminals were overpowered by the superior firepower of the security forces, forcing them to flee and abandon the victims.
Speaking on the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the bravery and professionalism of the officers Involved. He also acknowledged the critical role played by community members and human rights activists who joined forces with the police during the rescue mission.
“This success is a testament to our commitment to making Delta State unsafe for criminals. I commend the gallantry of our operatives and the resilience of the Ubuluku community vigilantes and other well-meaning indigenes who stood by our officers. We will not relent in our fight against crime,” CP Abaniwonda stated.
The victims, rescued unharmed, have since reunited with their families. Security forces also recovered exhibits from the scene, including 13 expended cartridges and a bag containing ?1,300,000, suspected to be ransom money. Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
