Former Governor of Imo State, Chief Achike Udenwa, has dismissed reports (not by News Express) that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) in connection with campaign fund fraud.
His Media Assistant Peter Agba Kalu said in a statement: “His Excellency was never arrested as he honoured an invitation by EFCC, which is normal. He was never detained rather, the EFCC officials treated him with courtesy and respect and simply requested info on the campaign funding, which he obliged.
“The campaign fund for Imo State was received like all presidential campaign funds in the 36 states of the Federation. It was lodged in a joint account opened solely for that purpose.
“There is nothing absolutely wrong with the EFCC invitation to merit the level of publicity stunt that followed. The EFCC officials were professional in carrying out their duty.
“Once more, His Excellency was never arrested or detained and the news making round that he accepted to refund the money is not true as the money was used for the purpose it was meant.
“Most importantly, he is ever ready to assist the anti-corruption agency to carry out their constitutional duty.”
