Nigeria, Ghana vow to tackle herdsmen/farmers’ conflicts, other crimes

Nigeria and Ghana have pledged to strengthen their age-long mutual relationship especially in the area of security to address the emerging security threats in both countries.

The Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Williams Awinador-Kanyirigi, said this on Friday in Abuja when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau.

Awinador recounted the age-long beneficial ties between both countries and stressed the need to strengthen them in all their ramifications, especially as regards security.

He said that Ghana was also contending with the herdsmen/farmers’ crisis and, therefore, harped on the need for both countries to share intelligence in tackling the menace.

He said that the herdsmen/farmers’ conflict had assumed a regional dimension and, therefore, called for a sustainable regional solution to end the crisis.

Earlier, Dambazau thanked the High Commissioner for the visit and called for more collaboration in the area of internal security.

He specifically called for more collaboration in the areas of intelligence sharing to track down movement of arms and ammunition; transnational criminals; trafficking in persons and cyber crime.

He assured the Ghanaian envoy of Nigeria’s willingness to also share ideas on finding lasting solutions to the Pastoralists/ Farmers’ conflict which was now become a regional security concern.

The minister also emphasised the need for both countries to champion regional security and stability in the West African sub-region. (NAN)
