Quit if you cannot check Fulani herdsmen, activists tell President Buhari •Give 7-day ultimatum

A coalition of human rights activists in Nigeria has given seven days ultimatum to President Buhari and security agents to fish out sponsors of the Agatu and Enugu massacres, even as they urged President Muhamamdu Buhari to step aside from office, if he cannot put a stop to the incessant mindless killing of innocent citizens by Fulani herdsmen, saying that they have concluded arrangements to storm the nation’s seat of power, Aso Rock Villa, to register their displeasure over the development.

They sympathised with the governments and people of the affected states and communities in the federation over the loss of their loved ones massacred by the rampaging Fulani herdsmen.

The activists that gathered under the aegis of Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ), include Centre for Constitutional Rights and Counter Corruption Crusader, Save Lagos Group (SLG), The Conscience Mainstream (TMG), African Masses Voices for Survival (AMVS), The Christians Youths for the Peoples’ Rights and Development (CYPRD), Islamic Movement for Muslims’ Rights (IMMR), Divine Nigerians Liberators for Peoples’ Fundamental Rights (DNLPFR).

Others were The Christian Awareness Mission Group (CAMG), Passengers Fundamental Rights Group (PATRGIA), The Political Awareness Group (TIPAG), Centre for Social Justice and Equity of Nigeria (CESJEN), Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEOS), Veteran Groups for Operation Clean Crusade (VGOCC), Apata-Aiyeraye Social Political Volunteer Group (ASPVG) and De-Mainstream Independent Group (DIG).

The group issued the statement Wednesday, after an expanded meeting on the ‘State of the nation’, their leader, Comrade Alimi Sulaiman Adeniyi, disclosed that the group discussed extensively on the ongoing massacre of innocent Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen, particularly the u killings and Tuesday’s Enugu killings, where over 40 people were massacred.

According to Adeniyi, the group agreed that they would soon storm Aso Rock Villa in large numbers, to show their grievances against the rampaging Fulani herdsmen and insincerity of President Buhari on the protection of lives and property, as stipulated in the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The comrade, who called on security agents in the country to wake up from their slumber and be alive to their constitutional duties of protecting the lives and property of citizens, urged the security agents to increase their intelligence gathering mechanism so as to forestall future occurrence, recalling that this was how Boko Haram insurgents began some years back in the country.

The group gave seven days ultimatum to President Buhari and security agents to fish out the sponsors of the Agatu and Enugu massacre by bringing them to justice, adding that if President fails to do anything to curb or put an end to this Fulani herdsmen’s madness, then, there is trouble in his hand.

They strongly condemned the body language of President Buhari over the murderous activities of the Fulani herdsmen, which according to them shows no serious concern to the ugly development. This, the group said, shows his degree of ethnic bigotry, contrary to the Oath of Allegiance for the Office of the President, in line with the seventh schedule of the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The group reasoned: “Let’s call a spade a spade. We strongly condemn the recent brutal invasion of communities in the country, especially the Agatu and Ukpabi Nimbo, by the Fulani herdsmen. And, the attitude of the Federal Government towards the Fulani herdsmen poses serious threat to the peaceful co-existence of Nigerians. It is high time for President Buhari to quit office, if he cannot put the madness under control. We feel that the Buhari-led government is just playing games and politics with the lives of innocent human beings. This mindless killing must be stopped within reasonable time before it goes out of hand.”
