Actor Nick Pasqual has been arrested at the border between the US and Mexico, and charged with allegedly stabbing and attempting to murder his estranged girlfriend, authorities have said.

Mr Pasqual is accused of breaking into the victims home and stabbing her multiple times, shortly after she had taken a restraining order out against him, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney.

They did not identify her, but she has been named in US media as Hollywood make-up artist Allie Shehorn.

Mr Pasqual allegedly fled the scene and was detained at a checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas.

He has had minor roles in films like Rebel Moon Part One and Jobs, and TV shows including How I Met Your Mother.

He also starred In sketch comedy podcast National Day Riff, and sci-fi series A Demons Destiny: The Lone Warrior.

Friends of Ms Shehorn set up a fundraising page for her, saying she was fighting for her life, in critical condition.

In a statement, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said the heinous incident was a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence.
