Adamawa apologises to WHO over false claim on Polio eradication

The Adamawa state Ministry of Health has retracted its earlier announcement on the status of the state on polio disease tendering apologies to the public

Expressing regret, the Ministry in a statement signed and issued by the Ministry’s information officer in Yola, Mr. Abubakar Muhammad apologised to the World Health Organization (WHO) Management over the incorrect information.

It could be recalled that, in an earlier press statement issued by the Ministry announcing that the WHO has declared the state as Polio-free which later found to be erroneous and misleading.

“We regret to inform WHO and general public on the publication in some national dailies that WHO declared Adamawa as a Polio free state.

“The statement contained in the publication as stated by Dr Nuhu Ningi was later confirmed as misleading and didn’t convey the intended message.

“We highly apologised and regret all the inconveniences this misinformation might have caused” the statement said.

According to the statement, the state government and its partners especially WHO would continue to work hand in hand to ensure all the children in Adamawa are protected against polio and other vaccine preventable diseases

“Our ministry through Director of information, Malam Abubakar Muhammed, had last Friday April 15, 2016, in a statement claimed that Dr Nuhu Ningi, a former WHO Coordinator in the state, has confirmed that Adamawa was free of Polio virus since 2009 which not correct and hereby retracted with unreserved apology to WHO and the public”. The statement regretted.
