Any person or group of people, who decides, rather unjustly, to detract the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, is to be seen as number one enemy of Nigeria, who doesn’t want the country to prosper economically.
This was the submission of a pro-democracy group, Patriots for Democracy for All, PDA, over suspected sponsored media attacks on the CBN boss. The group said: “Anybody who is opposed to the good work this financial expert of our time is doing is anti people and enemy of progress.”
A release from the group, signed by its National President, Obinna ChukwuemekaKalu, stated that “Nigeria belongs to all, irrespective of religious, social, ethnic or political affiliations,” reminding that “Emefiele’s job is a tenured one that has three more years to expire.”
The release wondered “when Nigerians would get out of these primordial sentiments that are always counterproductive and anti-progress,” pointing out that “if Emefiele’s expertise has earned him that office, it is because politics is reward-based in an environment where ability and competence are prerequisite for appointment.”
It stated that the current forex situation in the country is mainly as a result of the sharp fall in the global oil prices by about 65 percent, noting that the situation is not peculiar to Nigeria. The group praised the CBN under Emefiele for applying the correct response to tackle the crisis.
It said: “What the apex bank did was dimensional demand for forex and excluding items we can produce locally so as to ensure that the scarce forex remaining is allocated for manufacturing and raw materials imports.”
The statement further advised that “Emefiele should be left alone to continue to chart further course for the country’s financial and economic recovery,” submitting that “at this point in time in Nigeria, expertise of experts like him is highly required if truly we are committed to the country’s economic growth and progress.”
