Gunmen invade Bayelsa monarch’s residence

Unknown gunmen on Saturday attacked the country home of King A J Turner at Opume in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, destroying household furniture and electronics.

The gunmen, about twenty in number, were said to have stormed the community in two speed boats at about 12:55 a.m.

Witnesses said that the gunmen were clad in military uniform and black outfit.

Though no life was lost during the attack said to have lasted about three hours, properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by the invaders.

According to a community source, the gunmen also brutalised the deputy chairman of the community council of chiefs before forcing their victim to accompany them to the residence of the monarch, where they used dynamite to force the gate open.

Though the monarch, an ally of former president Goodluck Jonathan, and members of his family were not around when the attack took place, the hoodlums were said to have ransacked the entire house and in the process destroyed several furniture and electronics.

A community source said they were jolted from their sleep by the booming sound of gun shots and nobody dared come out to challenge the invaders.

Bayelsa Police Command Spokesman, Asinim Butswat, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident as he was away at Amassoma on official duty.
