Gunmen abduct Bayelsa Commissioner

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Sunday abducted Bayelsa Commissioner for Local Government Madam Serefina Otazi, family sources say.

Mr Patrick Oba, nephew to the commissioner said that she was kidnapped in Otuoke on her way to Ewoi Community in Ogbia Local Government Area (LGA) for a funeral at gun point.

The kidnappers reportedly whisked away the victim, who was in company of two ladies, and took away her car keys ostensibly to frustrate attempts to report the crime.

It was gathered that the two female occupants of the car and the driver were unharmed by the gunmen who sped off to an unknown destination in their own vehicle.

Otazi had served as Commissioner for Women Affairs and Acting Chairman of Ogbia LGA.

Mr Endurance Frank, a family member, told our reporter that the family had reported the incident to the police and prayed that the victim would be released unhurt.

In another development, Police in Bayelsa on Sunday confirmed the kidnap of Miss Nancy Dickson, younger sister to the State Governor, Seriake Dickson.

Asinim Butswat, an Assistant Superintendent of Police and spokesman for Bayelsa Police Command, confirmed the development in Yenagoa.

Butswat said that Nancy, 26, was abducted in her shop located on Okaka Road, Yenagoa, the state capital on Saturday.

He said that the gunmen, who drove in an ash Lexus SUV, trailed Nancy to her shop and whisked her away to an unknown place at about 2:50 p.m.

The Police Spokesman, however, said that shortly after the incident was reported they (Police) mounted “stop and search operation” on vehicles at different parts of the state capital.
