Senate approves bill to set up North-East Development Commission

The Senate on Wednesday approved a bill proposing the establishment of North-East Development Commission, which would be charged with the responsibility of receiving and managing funds from allocations from the Federation Account and international donors. The proposed commission would also be responsible for the rehabilitation and construction of roads, houses and business premises of insurgency victims and related matters.

The bill, which was the brainchild of Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, was co-sponsored by all the 18 senators representing the North-East geo-political zone. Ndume, who initiated the bill, said: “If the bill is passed into law, it would restore and rebuild the areas devastated by the frequent attacks of insurgents in the region.”

Senator Usman Nafada, in his comment, said that the bill would bring a lot of benefits to the region in the area of security.

Senate President Bukola Saraki noted that the Senate must remain united to ensure an end to the destruction going on in the North-East as well as providing succour to the people.
