London 2012 Olympics: Nigeria’s poor showing continues as Okagbare flops

Just when it seemed that she would give Nigeria something to smile about, sprint star Blessing Okagbare flopped when it mattered most, failing to pick a medal in the final of women’s 100 meters race of the on-going London 2012 Olympic Games decided a few minutes ago.

Okagbare has been in blistering form lately and won her heats, thus raising the hope of Nigerians, but failed to live u to expectation in the final, finishing outside the medal zone at the Olympic Stadium in London. She came last among the eight finalists, finishing in a disappointing 11.01 seconds.

Okagbare had her earlier in the day when she raced to a new personal best time of 10.93 to win her first round heat and qualified for the women’s 100m semi-final this afternoon. She similarly won the semi-final before flopping when it mattered most to cap a day when Nigerian athletes fared badly, leaving the country yet without a medal.

Speaking before the race, Okagbare had expressed her desire to win gold, saying: “I’m just excited. I’m hoping everything will fall in place. Gold is anybody’s and I’m going to do my best.”
