Immigration Recruitment: Stampede victims protest neglect

Families and victims affected by the March 2014 Immigration recruitment stampede have staged a protest in Abuja, asking the Federal Government to wade into the matter.

The victims alleged that six months after they were offered jobs by the Nigeria Immigration Service, they were yet to resume work.

The victims have appealed to the Federal Government to assist them by ensuring that they resume work as promised by the last administration because the situation has brought untold hardship to their families.

The victims and their families were also at the National Assembly to seek help on the matter. They were received by the House Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, who gave them an assurance that justice would be done on the matter.

The House of Representatives had earlier summoned the management of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) over its recruitment test that turned tragic in some parts of the country.

The Service’s recruitment exercise in 2014 led to a stampede which claimed 45 lives and left many more injured.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan offered automatic employment to three members of the family of each deceased applicant and all those injured as compensation. (Channels TV)
