Former governor of Bayelsa, Chief Diepriye Alamieyeseigha, has died, aged 63.
The news was first broadcast by a local radio station in Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa, and later by the state radio.
The report said that the man widely known as Governor General of the Ijaw Nation died of cardiac arrest at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in neighbouring Rivers State.
Sources in Yenagoa told News Express that Alamieyeseigha had been hospitalised after his health suddenly deteriorated following moves by the fledgling Muhammadu Buhari administration to extradite him to the United Kingdom for his unfinished corruption trial.
