The Nasarawa State University, Keffi, on Friday said it admitted only 4,078 out of 24,614 candidates that applied for admission in to the 2015/2016 academic session.

The Registrar of the university, Alhaji Dalhatu Mamman, disclosed this when the management of the institution appeared before the state House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology in Lafia.

He said that the 2015/2016 admission followed due process in line with academic standard.

“After thorough scrutiny of the candidates that applied for the 2015/2016 admission in to the university, over 4,000 candidates were given admission out of which 3,255 are indigenes of the state, while 823 that got the admission are non-indigenes.”

According to him, 24,614 candidates applied for the 2015/2016 admission in to the university, out of which 12,133 are citizens of the state while 12,401 are non-indigenes.

He added that the university admitted only 74 direct entry students out of 152 direct entry candidates that passed the school examination for the admission.

The registrar restated the commitment of the university to continue to collaborate with the Assembly in order to improve on the standard of education in the state for the overall development of the country.

Earlier, Mr. Daniel Oga-Ogazi, the Chairman of the committee, said that the invitation of the management of the university was not to witch-hunt anyone but to sanitise the system for the overall development of the state.

“First and foremost, I want to thank you for honouring our invitation as it was not meant to witch hunt anybody, but to provide answers to the outcry of the people of the state on the 2015/2016 admission of your institution.

“As we are all aware that the act establishing the university said that 80 per cent of every admission of the institution should be indigenes while 20 per cent should be non-indigenes.

“But in this year’s admission, our children are crying out there for not getting admission in to the university.

“We are directing you to provide the statistics used in giving admission to each of the local government areas of the state with details on the 80 per cent admission of indigenes as required by the law in the interest of peace and national development.”

He said that the 2015/2016 academic session admission list of the university did not favour the indigenes of the state as complained by the people, hence the need to correct any abnormality, if discovered, to boost higher education in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the state House of Assembly on Sept. 6 passed a resolution directing the Vice Chancellor of the university to appear before it on Monday, Oct. 12, to answer questions on the 2015/2016 admission exercise. (NAN)
